Deciding what type of power instruments to purchase can be confusing initially. The following notes are meant to help you differentiate what is available, so you can decide what is right for you. Of course, if you have any questions, please call to speak with one of our knowledgeable representatives.
The Power Source
There are 2 main choices for motors:
1. The PowerFloat system: With this system the burr is permanently attached to the motor. As such, you can only use one type of burr per motor. These are generally avail-
able as battery powered units or can be plugged into a wall outlet.
2. A motor with a shaft:
• This system is very versatile as it allows operators to use virtually any hand piece desired. This allows the practitioner to customize the dental instruments to meet the patients needs. • This system is generally much cheaper as most motors cost under $500. Then, based on budget and needs, you can purchase one hand piece at a time.
• In order to regulate the speed of the burr you are using, you will need to have a foot pedal that controls the power to the motor.
The type of cable (Applies only to the Motor with Shaft Option)
There are only 2 cable systems available. One is a square cable that is stronger and heavier than the round key-way cable. The most popular model is the round key-way system. It is more difficult to find hand pieces that fit the square cable, but some practitioners prefer the square shaft because it allows for more torque and the cables break less often. It is advisable to carry one or two spare cables as they do tend to break occasionally. All cables can be changed within a few minutes. Cables are housed in a flexible sheath, which doesn’t need to be replaced very often. Motors come with a shaft and sheath installed.
